From the commune of La Roche Vineuse, one of the Mâconnais’ more qualitatively excellent sites, winemaker Thomas Perraud of Domaine Perraud de la Grande Burette selects only older-vine fruit for our special and exclusive white Burgundy wine. This overachieving Mâcon-Villages hits all the white Burgundy sweet spots—succulent fruit, a tangy minerality from the vineyard’s chalky soils, balanced alcohol and a price point that for the quality, seems criminal.

In 1810, Madame Clicquot invented the first Vintage Champagne, in 2012 Veuve Clicquot declared the 66th vintage of the Maison. With grapes exclusively from Grands and Premiers Crus, Pinot Noir dominates the blend (51%) and provides the structure that is so typically Clicquot, followed by Chardonnay (34%) that adds finesse and elegance essential in a perfectly balanced wine, and then Meunier (15%) that rounds out the blend. The uniqueness of the Vintage 2012 lies in the addition of 11% of wines aged in large wooden casks (foudres), bringing strength and aromatic intensity. The cask-aged wines act as spices to the blend, bringing very lightly woody, vanilla and toasted aromas.

All about precision and texture. There's clearly a lot of concentration and underlying power in the focused core. It's chalky and all sinew on the almost chewy, lengthy finish, giving it line and energy. The scent of almond croissant from barrel fermentation and lees time lingers alongside apple fruit. Really good stuff that will only get better with time in bottle.

A benchmark wine of Alsace, this is not far in style from an unoaked Chardonnay: sleek and crisp with ripe white fruit. Hugel is extremely protective of its long tradition and family character, determined not to fall prey to the trap of corporate wine. While the company owns the buildings and the machinery, the family members still own and farm the vineyards. The Hugel cellars also hold the oldest cask in the world still in use, called ‘the Sainte Caterine’. It was built in 1715!
